2 hospitalized in I-57 accident

TOLONO — Two people were hospitalized following an accident Wednesday evening on Interstate 57 in rural Tolono.

According to a state police report, Vera Venable-George, 57, of Oakland was driving a silver pickup truck south on Interstate 57 at 6 p.m. Wednesday when the truck's windshield began to get fogged at mile marker 225 west of Tolono.

Venable-George attempted to move the truck to the shoulder of the road to clear the fogged windshield when the vehicle rear-ended a second pickup driven by James Grimsley, 49, of Hammond. Grimsley's truck had been parked on the shoulder of the highway.

Both Venable-George and Grimsley were taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, which had no information on their condition late Wednesday night.

Police said the accident closed both southbound lanes of Interstate 57 for about 50 minutes while emergency personnel responded to the crash.

Police had not issued any tickets in connection with the incident as of 11 p.m. Wednesday.
