Dance event at UI this weekend

URBANA — The University of Illinois Department of Dance this weekend will present Studiodance 2, which will feature works that range across a spectrum of styles and choreographic voices.

The choreographers include a freshman working with a group of community high school students, Taiwanese guests of the dance department and a second-year master of fine arts candidate.

According to a release from the department:

"There are four solos each with a distinct movement vocabulary and choreographic perspective. The three group works are extremely varied. One, choreographed by one of our up-and-coming freshmen, is in the vein of competitive dance styles.

"She works with high school dancers from a local studio, Art in Motion and has developed a finely wrought and moving group work. The other two group works have a Taiwanese connection. Ysaye McKeever was an exchange student last year and interweaves influences from Hula, Lakota prayer and contemporary dance into an absorbing and contemplative piece.

"Ming-Hsuan Szu Tu is an exchange student visiting from the same school in Taiwan and her piece takes both a playful and serious look at the different modes of translation in both verbal and movement languages."

The performances will be at 7 and 9 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the Studio Theatre at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts.

Tickets are $7 to $14 and can be purchased online at krannertcenter.com or by calling 333-6280 or 800-527-2849. Patrons who are deaf, hard-of-hearing or speech-impaired may also acquire tickets via TTY at 333-9714.
