Bikes sought for sale to help Habitat
CHAMPAIGN — Used bikes are being sought for a consignment sale to benefit Habitat for Humanity of Champaign County.
The fourth annual community used bike sale will be held at Champaign Cycle, 505 S. Country Fair Drive, C, on May 4-5.
The sale earned $6,000 for Habitat last year through the 10 percent consignment fee bike sellers are charged, and proceeds from some of the bike sales.
Some people outright donate their bicycles, so the entire proceeds of the sale go to Habitat, said Champaign Cycle owner Peter Davis.
"It's been very successful for the buyers and the sellers and Habitat," Davis said. "Champaign Cycle makes nothing on this sale. This is something we do for the community."
Bicycles will be accepted for the sale through May 1. Bikes can't be accepted after that time, because they have to be prepared for the sale.
Champaign Cycle will inspect all bikes, and they must be in good operating condition, according to Champaign Cycle.
Owners can set their own prices for bikes they're selling, and store employees will also provide an opinion on what a reasonable price for the bikes are.
There's a "huge demand" for the bikes, Davis said.
So for the best selection, buyers should be prepared to come the first day, and don't wait too long, he advises.
Most of the sale takes place between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. the first day, he said.
Sale hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 4 and noon to 4 p.m. May 5.
