Marathon will affect bus routes

Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District bus service will be affected Friday evening and most of Saturday by the Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon races.

Friday reroutes begin at about 6 p.m. because the 5K race begins at 7:30 p.m. on Oak Street, just south of St. Mary's Road. The rest of the route includes St. Mary's Road east to Fourth Street, north to Peabody Drive, east to Sixth Street, north to Green Street, west to First Street and south to Memorial Stadium.

Those reroutes affect only campus area bus routes and should be relatively short-lived, probably about an hour, according to MTD marketing director Jan Kijowski.

But Saturday's reroutes are more expansive, affecting every bus route, and will last from the beginning of the service day to around 3 p.m., she said.

Saturday MTD service begins at 6 p.m. The marathon begins at 7 a.m. and the race course is projected to be open for seven hours.

The MTD carries up to 25,000 passengers on Saturdays, Kijowski said, meaning that thousands of riders will be inconvenienced by the race.

Customers are advised to expect delays and plan accordingly. Details of all reroutes will be available on the MTD website at
