UI small animal clinic named one of nine national trauma centers

URBANA — The small animal emergency service at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital is now one of one of nine veterinary trauma centers in the nation.

The provisional designation, announced Thursday, came from the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care.

It's a new designation for veterinary hospitals and clinics intended to improve treatment outcomes by creating a network of lead hospitals to foster development of trauma care for animals throughout the country, according to VetMed.

A hospital must have board-certified specialists in emergency and critical care, surgery and radiology available for consultation around-the-clock to achieve the designation, according to Dr. Maureen McMichael, director of the UI's small animal emergency and critical care service.
