Rapper arrested in Chicago on Champaign County warrant

URBANA — Rapper Lil Reese — whose given name is Tavares Taylor — was arrested in Chicago early Sunday morning on a Champaign County warrant.

The 20-year-old Chicago man is charged with criminal trespass to a residence, mob action and battery, for allegedly pushing, slapping and otherwise battering a woman in February 2012.

The warrant was issued last Thursday and is related to an incident that happened Feb. 19 of last year.

In mid-April, Champaign police sent additional information to the state’s attorney’s office about the incident, and a warrant was issued for Taylor last week.

Champaign police spokeswoman Rene Dunn said a report wasn’t filed with police until Oct. 25 of last year, after a video of the incident was posted online “and the suspect’s identity was disclosed.”

The day of the incident, a woman who was 18 at the time returned at about 5:30 a.m. to her apartment in the 2000 block of Moreland Boulevard, Champaign.

There, she found between 20 and 25 people, and reported that she believed a family member let them in.

“At this time, the woman asked the occupants to leave,” Dunn said.

The victim told police that Taylor refused. A argument followed, and then Taylor allegedly pushed the victim multiple times and slapped her.

“The suspect then made threats and a physical fight ensued,” Dunn said, adding that another unidentified male and female were also involved. “The victim fell to the ground and the suspects continued to stomp and kick her while she was down.”

The fight ended when others intervened.

“At this time, the police were called and the suspect and all other occupants fled from the apartment, to include the victim, who fled to a safer location,” Dunn said.

Taylor remains in custody in Cook County.
