Former council member chosen 'Father' finalist

A former Urbana City Council member has been selected as a finalist for Jet magazine's first annual "Fantastic Father" contest.

James Hayes Jr. is a finalist for the award, which honors men who make positive impacts not only on their family but also within the black community.

Hayes, of Rantoul, is retired from the military and the school system. He was a city council member in Urbana and a beekeeper and currently mentors others.

People can vote for Hayes today during the one-day-only online poll at this address:

The winner will be featured in Jet's annual men's issue, which hits the newsstands on May 20.
