Second iPad theft suspect charged
URBANA — A second man wanted in connection with a 2011 robbery on the University of Illinois campus that was captured on video has been arrested and arraigned.
Keith Payton, 21, of Glenwood, was arraigned Friday on charges of armed robbery and aggravated robbery that had been filed against him in early April in connection with an Oct. 10, 2011, incident in which one man displayed a weapon to a then-48-year-old man seated outside the Espresso Royale, 602 E. Daniel St., C, while a second grabbed his iPad and ran off.
State's Attorney Julia Rietz said it was co-defendant Dennis Boston, 20, of Urbana, who led police to Payton. Boston pleaded guilty last week to a reduced charge of theft for a sentence of 18 months of probation.
Rietz said it was allegedly Payton who displayed a gun — which may have been a BB gun — to the victim, while Boston grabbed the iPad and ran.
Payton was picked up in Glenwood on April 8. After his court appearance in Urbana Friday, he posted $15,000 cash to be released and was told to be back in court May 14.
