Red Cross announces blood donation opportunities

The American Red Cross has announced a series of blood donation opportunities in the upcoming weeks in East Central Illinois.

American Red Cross spokesman Ben Corey said that blood donations often decline during the summer, when schools are out and vacations are in.

"The Red Cross encourages donors to make an appointment to give now to help ensure a stable supply in the weeks and months ahead, giving patients a chance to create a summer of stories," Corey said in a written release.

He said that donors who give blood between May 23 and 31 in honor of Memorial Day could win one of five $1,000 American Express gift cards.

The upcoming events include the following:

— 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 16 at the Stevick Senior Citizen Center, 48 Main St., Champaign.
