Phone scam targets Ford County residents

PAXTON — Ford County Circuit Clerk Kim Evans is warning of a telephone scam targeting Ford County residents.

Evans said a caller claiming to be from the circuit clerk's office contacted "a whole bunch of people" Tuesday and said they owed $500 in fees.

The caller said there would be a warrant issued for their arrest if they do not provide their credit card numbers to pay the fine.

Evans said the calls did not come from her office. The phone numbers used by the scammer were 678-229-2394 and 888-232-4465.

"We do not do business like this," Evans said. "If you have a question, call our office (at 379-9420) and we will verify whether there's a warrant or not. We do not call you and take a credit card number over the phone.

"Do not give a credit card number over the phone for fines and fees for the Ford County circuit clerk's office."

Evans said she has informed the Ford County sheriff's office.
