Driver ticketed for DUI in 2-car crash on I-74

URBANA — Three people were taken to an Urbana hospital following a crash on Interstate 74 early Monday in which one of the drivers was ticketed for driving under the influence.

The crash happened at about 1:30 a.m. Monday, on I-74 westbound about 2 1/2 miles east of the University Avenue exit.

According to state police, Maurice L. Howard, 37, of Champaign was driving in the left lane approaching a second car when he suddenly changed lanes and hit the second car from behind.

Both cars went into a ditch on the right side of the highway, with Howard's coming to rest on its side.

Howard refused medical treatment at the scene, but his passenger, Marcus D. Price, 33, of Champaign, was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Also taken to Carle were the driver of the second car, Dynal R. Wrightner, 38, of Peoria, and Kevin R. Welch, 48, also of Peoria.

Carle had no information on any of the three.

Howard was ticketed for DUI and for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Wrightner was ticketed for operating an uninsured vehicle.
