Man arrested for attempting to disarm a police officer

URBANA — A Champaign man is being held at the Champaign County Jail after being arrested for attempting to disarm a police officer.

According to Champaign police, officers were called to the 1500 block of Hedge Road at about 6 p.m. Monday to respond to a report of a man trespassing on a neighbor’s property.

When officers arrived, the man, identified by police as Jamahl Johnson, who listed an address in the 1400 block of West Kirby Avenue, Champaign, ran away from the officers before they were able to capture him.

Police said that Johnson has a history of mental illness.

While a police officer was trying to restrain Johnson, Johnson tried to disarm the police officer.

Johnson was taken to Presence Covenant Medical Center, where he received treatment. Police then took him to the Champaign County Jail for attempting to disarm a police officer.

Johnson is expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
