Female teacher at UHS arrested

UPDATED 6 p.m. Wednesday

URBANA — A female teacher at Urbana High School was arrested Wednesday afternoon for the criminal sexual assault, criminal sexual abuse and indecent solicitation of a 16-year-old male student.

Urbana police arrested teacher Tammy L. Bond, 45, who listed an address in the 1700 block of South Prospect Avenue, Champaign, at her home.

According to an Urbana police report, officers were called to investigate circumstances involving Bond and the student Monday, after the teen's mother noticed he was getting special treatment and gifts from the teacher and was spending time with the teacher outside of school.

On Tuesday, Urbana police detectives worked with Urbana High School officials to investigate, including interviewing the people involved and collecting evidence, including cellphones.

"The admissions obtained and the evidence collected indicated that inappropriate sexual contact had occurred between the student and teacher off of school grounds," said Urbana police Lt. Bryant Seraphin in a written statement.

The police department says the teacher was suspended from her job at the school on Tuesday.

Police arrested her at her home at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. She was being held at the Champaign County Jail on $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
