Man hurt in roof collapse

UPDATED 10:30 p.m. Wednesday

CHAMPAIGN — A man who was doing demolition work on a mobile home was hospitalized after a roof collapsed Wednesday afternoon in unincorporated Champaign.

Bondville Fire Chief Adam Shaw said firefighters were called to a mobile home at 4809 W. Windsor Road at 1:52 p.m. Wednesday.

Buster Ferraro, 24, who lives in another mobile home at the mobile home park, said he was demolishing the building when the roof collapsed.

In about 10 minutes, firefighters were able to free Ferraro, who was trapped under the roof.

Ferraro was taken by ambulance to a Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. Ferraro said he had a broken collar bone and needed stitches on his ear.

"My ear was ripped halfway off," Ferraro said late Wednesday night after coming home from the hospital.

“We also made sure that all the utilities were shut off,” Shaw said.

No firefighters were injured, according to Shaw.

Firefighters left the scene at 2:23 p.m. Wednesday. Shaw said the building was a total loss.

Bondville firefighters received mutual aid assistance from the Seymour, Cornbelt and Champaign fire departments.

The cause of the collapse remains under investigation.
