Woman identified who died in fall from Campustown high-rise

UPDATED 6:15 p.m. Friday
CHAMPAIGN — Champaign police are investigating an incident in Campustown involving the death of a woman who fell from a high-rise building.
Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said Stephanie Ognar, 39, of Champaign fell or jumped from the 24-story building at 309 E. Green St. about 11:20 a.m. Friday.
Ms. Ognar was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:50 a.m., Northrup said.
Northrup said an autopsy will be performed on Saturday, but it appeared the woman died of multiple traumatic injuries.
Champaign police Lt. Robert Rea said it appears likely the woman jumped. She was not a student.
“I don’t believe she lived there,” he said, adding that the doors to the roof area where her purse and shoes were found are locked so police are trying to figure out how she got to the roof. They obtained surveillance video to try to shed light on that.
Green Street between Third and Fourth streets was closed for about three hours after the incident.
Northrup said the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation by his office and the Champaign Police Department.
“The preliminary investigation indicates this fall may have been intentional,” Northrup said. “However, the investigation is ongoing.”
Northrup said an inquest may be held at a later date.
