Rantoul group offering plane rides for veterans

A group in Rantoul is offering free rides to war veterans in a World War II bi-plane trainer on Memorial Day and is seeking nominations for the flights.

The Regional Veterans Memorial Committee has arranged for 10 free rides in the Stearman to honor veterans for their service and dedication.

Committee member and retired Army Major Doug Rokke said a Stearman is one of the great airplanes in history and is featured at many airshows to this day.

Rokke also said the committee is asking for a 30-50 word letter explaining why the veteran should be selected. The committee and pilot will choose 10 veterans from the nominations.

Rides will begin on Memorial Day at 9 a.m. following a brief ceremony at Chanute Air Field.  Each flight will last 20-30 minutes.  Rokke said each veteran will be given a specific time for his flight.

The group is also seeking corporate or individual sponsors for the event, with all proceeds going toward a regional veterans memorial to be built on the old Chanute Air Base.

The free rides are being offered by Darryl Fisher of Ageless Aviation Dreams, based in Nevada.
