URBANA — The Urbana school board voted at a special meeting Wednesday to fire Tammy Bond, a high school teacher accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old teen she tutored.
The board voted 4-0 to terminate Bond. Board members present at the vote were Vice President Benita Rollins-Gay, and members Ruth Ann Fisher, Elaine Gehrmann and Paul Poulosky.
Bond was charged last week with two counts of criminal sexual assault, two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, and two counts of indecent solicitation of a child, all alleging sex acts that took place between March and May 6. All the charges contain the element that Bond was in a position of trust and authority over the teen, whom she tutored at the high school.
Bond had been a special education teacher at Urbana High School.
No board members answered questions about the vote, but the school board and district released a joint statement.
"The Board of Education has acted to terminate Tammy Bond's employment with the school district effective immediately," it said. "The school district will continue to cooperate with local law enforcement authorities as they continue their investigation."
