Coroner identifies shooting victim; police seek help
CHAMPAIGN — Champaign police have little to go on in the fatal shooting of a Champaign man at an apartment complex on the city's west side Tuesday night.
Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup on Wednesday identified the victim as Stevie Blount Sr., 24.
Northrup said the man died "as a result of multiple gunshot wounds."
Champaign police Lt. Robert Rea said that at 9:20 p.m. Tuesday, officers responded to a call of shots fired at the Country Brook apartment complex in the 2600 block of West Springfield Avenue.
They found Mr. Blount, who had been shot multiple times. He was taken by ambulance to Carle Foundation Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:12 p.m..
Rea said the slain man did not live at the complex.
"We have leads we're following up on," said Rea, who was not prepared to discuss those.
"It's not a good one," he said of the case.
Rea said police are uncertain how many people may have been responsible for the shooting and have no description of two men who were seen running south across Springfield Avenue from the apartment complex other than that one was wearing a white T-shirt and the other all dark clothing.
