Man pleads guilty to aggravated criminal sexual abuse
URBANA — A Champaign man who admitted groping a woman in a west Champaign apartment complex last month will be sentenced to probation once a judge confirms his plea agreement.
Shawn Banks, 38, who listed an address in the Country Brook Apartments in the 2600 block of West Springfield Avenue, will have to have a sex offender evaluation that Judge Heidi Ladd will review before she formally imposes Banks' sentence.
Banks pleaded guilty Wednesday to aggravated criminal sexual abuse, admitting that on April 3, he inappropriately touched a 21-year-old woman who was notifying tenants in the building of a pending rent increase.
A Champaign police report said Banks invited the woman into his apartment and when she got inside he locked the door behind her without her noticing. As she was reading a letter to him, he grabbed her around the waist from behind and began touching her. She jammed an elbow into his torso to get away.
Assistant State's Attorney Scott Bennett said Banks was sentenced to 30 months of probation and four months in the county jail. Banks will have to complete any treatment recommended by the sex offender evaluator and get a substance abuse evaluation as well. He was also ordered to have no contact with Country Brook Apartments or the victim.
The confirmation date for his sentence was set for June 17.
Bennett said Banks' prior convictions included theft, criminal trespass to residence and domestic battery.
