Driver charged with felony in cycle-truck crash

MONTICELLO — A Champaign man who allegedly ran over a motorcyclist in Mansfield last week and didn't stop to help him has been charged with a felony offense.

Wesley Luster, 19, of the 100 block of Avondale Avenue, was arraigned Thursday in Piatt County Circuit Court for leaving the scene of an accident involving a personal injury, a Class 4 felony carrying penalties ranging from probation to one to three years in prison.

State's Attorney Dana Rhoades said Luster was told to be back in court with an attorney May 30. He remains in the Piatt County jail on $50,000 bond.

The charge stemmed from Luster's arrest on May 8 for allegedly running over Paul Reynolds, 46, of rural Mansfield.

Piatt County Chief Deputy Mark Huckstep said about 1:15 p.m. that Wednesday, Reynolds was driving his motorcycle south in the 2700 block of County Road 1500 E when Luster made a left turn in front of Reynolds into a private drive. Luster was driving a pickup truck pulling a landscaping trailer.

Huckstep said Reynolds laid his bike down and skidded, hitting the side of Luster's truck. Luster then allegedly ran over Reynolds as he continued on to the property, circled around and pulled out, running over Reynolds with the trailer again.

He sustained multiple injuries and has been in Carle Foundation Hospital since the incident. He was listed in good condition there Wednesday.
