Champaign police investigating two afternoon robberies

CHAMPAIGN — Police are investigating two robberies that took place within two hours of each other Saturday afternoon that could be related.

Sgt. Brian Maloney said just after 3 p.m., a man entered the office for the Gentry Square apartment complex at 1712 Gentry Square Lane, pulled a dark handgun from his waistband and demanded cash from the woman there.

She handed over money, and he left on a bicycle, which he abandoned minutes later. It’s believed he then got into an older, dark-colored car, possibly a Chevrolet Impala, which went north on Mattis Avenue. Police recovered the bicycle.

The man was described as white, in his mid-to-late 30s, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a skinny to medium build. He was wearing an orange and blue hockey jersey, a dark ball cap and shorts.

Maloney said about 4:45 p.m., a man with the same description approached a woman in the parking lot of the Extended Stay Hotel at 610 W. Marketview Drive and robbed her of her purse. In that incident, the robber was wearing a blue shirt.

Police did not find the man. Maloney said neither of the women were physically hurt.

Anyone with information on either of the robberies is asked to call Champaign police at 351-4545 or Crimestoppers at 373-8477.

Information also may be sent anonymously at or by cellphone text message by sending CCTIP plus the information to CRIMES (274637).

Crimestoppers will pay a reward if the information leads an arrest. Cash rewards are also paid for information on other felony crimes or fugitives in the Champaign County area.
