Area under tornado watch until 5 a.m.

UPDATED 11:25 P.M.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for the area until 5 a.m. Tuesday.

Affected areas include  Champaign, Coles, Douglas, Edgar, Moultrie,  Piatt, and Vermilion counties.

A tornado watch means that conditions have created a significant risk of a tornado.

The National Weather service has issued a weather advisory for northwestern Coles, southeastern Piatt, southwestern Champaign and southwestern Douglas counties until 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The weather service is tracking a strong thunderstorm near Sullivan, moving northeast at 55 mph. Penny size hail and winds at about 50 mph are expected with this storm.
