GCMS board OKs roof repairs

GIBSON CITY — School board members have agreed to seek $134,676 in repairs to the elementary school's roof this summer.

Board members first approved a life-safety amendment for that amount to cover costs of providing a new roof over the first-grade addition on the building's south side, fixing the roof over the kitchen, and repairing all seams as needed on the entire roof.

Estimates for those actions were prepared by the district's architects, Henneman Engineering of Champaign.

The life-safety amendment becomes the basis for a grant application the board authorized Superintendent Anthony Galindo to file immediately with the Illinois State Board of Education's School Maintenance Project Grant.

If approved, the matching grant would provide up to $50,000 toward the cost of roof repairs.

Galindo stated that "if we don't get the grant, we will reduce the roof (project's) scope."

For other capital improvement funding, board members learned they would not be able to use future tax increment financing receipts for past capital expenses.

The future receipts refer to money the district could receive if it were to be successful in its ongoing legal case opposing One Earth Energy's appeal to lower its plant's assessed value.
