Updated: no injuries in Champaign attic fire

Updated:  3:45 p.m.

Champaign resident Thelma McMillian got an unwelcome interruption to her phone call on Monday afternoon when she heard a boom in her house at 1708 West Kirby Avenue.

McMillian was able to get out unharmed, but not before that fire damaged the attic of the one story home that she and her husband have lived in for over 20 years.

Meanwhile, Champaign Fire Marshal John Koller said firefighters had the blaze out in minutes and contained it to the attic.  They did have to cut a hole in the roof to allow smoke to escape.

Koller said there's no word on a cause or damage estimate at this point.  He said the home was insured but will not be liveable for a while.
