MONTICELLO — Piatt County sheriff's deputies hope they have solved a string of at least 13 rural burglaries over the past two years that occurred throughout the county.
Three teenagers were arrested May 8 and the investigation continues, according to Deputy Sgt. J.D. Russell. Arrested were Nathan Darsham, 19, of Monticello and two 17-year-olds. Formal charges had not been filed as of Monday.
The investigation accelerated after burglars were scared away by an alarm at a home between Cisco and Cerro Gordo at around 6:40 p.m. May 6. Neighbors were able to describe the vehicle, and sheriff's deputies stopped a vehicle matching the description in rural Bement two days later.
"When stopped on a traffic violation (improper lane usage), everything matched, including the tire marks," Russell said.
Russell said the suspects admitted to at least 13 break-ins, from Mansfield to Cerro Gordo, and from east of Bement to Cisco.
Some of the burglaries had not even been reported.
"If we don't know there are burglaries, we can't put extra patrols in those areas. That's why it's important to report," Russell said.
