Gunman taken to hospital following standoff in Douglas County

HINDSBORO — A man who fired more than 16 shots in the air during a standoff with Douglas County sheriff’s deputies on Friday is being treated at an area hospital.

According to a Douglas County sheriff’s report, deputies were calls to a home about 5 miles northeast of Hindsboro at 11:48 a.m. Friday to respond to a report of a family disturbance.

By the time the deputies arrived at the home, a 22-year-old man, who was not identified, had run into the woods carrying a rifle.

Chief Deputy Peter Buckley said sheriff’s deputies set up a perimeter around the area and talked to the gunman by way of a cellphone he was carrying.

While deputies talked to the man, Buckley said the man fired more than 16 shots in the air in the woods. No shots were fired at any law enforcement personnel, he said.

After deputies continued to talk to him, the gunman put down the rifle at 12:43 p.m. and surrendered to the deputies without further incident.

Buckley said the man was taken by ambulance to an area hospital, where he was undergoing treatment and evaluation on Friday evening.

Buckley said no formal charges have been filed against the man, but he said the reports will be forwarded to the Douglas County state’s attorney’s office.

Buckley said the name of the gunman is being withheld until criminal charges are filed.

Buckley said the deputies were assisted by Douglas County 911 telecommunicators, state police, the Department of Natural Resources-Law Enforcement and members of the gunman’s family.
