Urbana board OKs change to Owen's contract

URBANA — The Urbana school board voted 6-0 at a special meeting Friday to a change to the contract that future Superintendent Don Owen will work under when he starts that job this summer.

Board Vice President Benita Rollins-Gay was absent.

The change has to do with Owen's pension within the Teachers Retirement System and brings it in line with the contract members of the Urbana Education Association have been working under since last summer.

Owen will pay his own pension contributions to the Teachers Retirement System. Previously, his contract said the school board would pay his contributions.

The board approved the initial contract when it announced Owen would be its next superintendent in January 2012.

Current Superintendent Preston Williams will retire this summer.

"Today's action ... requires future superintendents to pay the entire employee contribution to their pension and to absorb any increase to the employee's contribution from his/her total creditable earnings," according to a news release from the school district, and the changes won't increase Owen's salary and benefits package from his original contract.
