Rantoul group seeking donations for war memorial

A committee in Rantoul wants to remember war veterans year-round for their service to our country.

The Regional Veterans Memorial Committee is trying to collect enough donations to erect a memorial on the old Chanute Air Base to honor all veterans from all the services.

Committee Chairman Jim Cheek said he's dreamed of building a veterans memorial since he returned to Rantoul from serving in the Vietnam War.  He said the memorial would be built on the north end of the parade ground area of the base.

Cheek also said bricks will be sold to the public for $150 to honor veterans with their names.  The bricks will line the floor of the memorial.

He said the memorial will also honor the role that the base played in the training of more than one million people in all the military services, along with veterans.

Cheek said $41,000 has been collected so far toward the estimated cost of $150,000.  Donations can be made to the Rantoul Veterans Memorial and sent to:
