'Action Auction' fundraiser aims for $100,000

CHAMPAIGN — The Rotary Club of Champaign will host an "Action Auction" fundraising event Saturday evening at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts in Urbana.

According to auction chairs Dean Cavey and Dan Wheatman, the goal is to raise $100,000 this year. One way is via a public raffle; raffle tickets are $10 each and available at the service counter at the Schnucks stores in Champaign, Urbana and Savoy from now until all 3,500 tickets are sold.

The grand first prize is a luxury Caribbean vacation for four; second prize, dinner, lodging and tickets for four to a Broadway show in Chicago; and third prize, $500 cash.

"If we can raise $100,000 we know we can put that money to good use in our community," Cavey said in a news release. "Our last auction in 2010 helped fund dozens of events or organizations such as the Backpack Buddies program, the Garden Hills Literacy Project, Read Across America, Developmental Services Center, Orpheum Children's Theatre, Center for Women in Transition, and many more."

The Rotary Club has had the Action Auction every three years since 1976. This year's auction sponsors include The News-Gazette, News-Talk 1400 WDWS-AM, Busey, Carle, Horizon Hobby Inc. and Verdant Partners LLC.
