Man charged in incident at Champaign store

URBANA — A Champaign man who allegedly fought with a store employee as he tried to take cash from the man has been criminally charged.

Joe D.T. Spearman, 23, who listed an address in the 1300 block of North Neil Street, was charged in Champaign County Circuit Court Tuesday with attempted robbery and aggravated battery.

The charges stem from an incident Sunday afternoon at the Golden Hour convenience store, 301 W. Bloomington Road, C.

Police spokeswoman Rene Dunn said police learned that Spearman was in the store about 2:20 p.m. and got upset when he learned he could not return a prior purchase. He allegedly tried to take cash from an employee's hand and got into a physical fight with the man that resulted in a display stand being knocked over and items being damaged.

He then ran from the store. Police found him near the intersection of Garden Lane and Fairview Avenue and arrested him.

The more serious charge of attempted robbery is a Class 2 felony carrying penalties ranging from probation to three to seven years in prison upon conviction.

Judge Rich Klaus ordered Spearman to be back in court July 30 with his court-appointed attorney. Spearman's bond was set at $10,000.
