Man charged in incident with disabled roommate

URBANA — An Urbana man who allegedly battered his disabled roommate was criminally charged Tuesday.

Lorenzo C. Smith, 42, who listed an address in the 1700 block of East Florida Avenue, was charged with aggravated battery to a senior citizen and theft for allegedly punching his 63-year-old roommate and stealing money from him by withdrawing it from an automated teller machine.

Urbana police Sgt. Dan Morgan said Smith was acting as the man's caretaker but was allegedly intimidating and hitting him in order to get money.

Police said other friends noticed marks on the man's face and helped him get in touch with police.

The criminal counts allege that Smith stole about $600 from the man between April 3 and May 24 and that he punched him between May 20 and 23 and again on May 24.

Smith was ordered to have no contact with the man and to be back in court July 30. He remained in the county jail Wednesday in lieu of $25,000 bond. He was arrested Friday.
