Man faces charges of aggravated criminal sexual abuse
URBANA — A Champaign man accused of inappropriate sexual contact with a teen-age girl is scheduled to be back in court in July.
Stephen M. Williams, 41, who listed an address in the 1200 block of Northwood Drive North, was charged Friday in Champaign County Circuit Court with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse for incidents that allegedly happened in March and September 2012 with the same girl, who was 15 and 16 at the time.
Investigator Dave Roesch said Williams came to the attention of police last November after a woman who was concerned because of Williams' tendency to hang out with teen-age girls. The alleged victim disclosed sexual contact with Williams to police in December, Roesch said.
Roesch said he and representatives of the Department of Children and Family Services interviewed about a dozen girls who had contact with Williams. Many said they did not have sexual contact with him and some who did were of a legal age to consent, Roesch said.
Roesch said much of the contact between Williams and the girls happened at his home in the 1400 block of Comanche Drive in Champaign. But Roesch said Urbana police got involved because the alleged victim in the criminal complaint lived in Urbana and that she and Williams often met at the Urbana Free Library.
Williams is being held in the Champaign County jail in lieu of $250,000 bond. If convicted, he faces penalties ranging from probation to three to seven years in prison.
He's due back in court July 23.
