Longtime Champaign barber hanging up the scissors

A longtime barber in Champaign who's hanging up his scissors this week is being remembered for impacting generations of people for nearly half of a century.

Joe Taylor has been a barber in Champaign for 48 years, except for the three years he served in the Army.

Taylor declined an interview request from the WDWS newsroom, as he did not want to shed a spotlight on his retirement.  But WDWS was able to speak with William Jones, who's a friend and colleague of Taylor.

Jones owns Rose and Taylor Barber and Beauty Shop, a business he purchased from Taylor in 2006.  Taylor then moved across the street to the North First Street Barber Shop.

Jones said as a child, Taylor was one of the barbers who cut his hair, and he's known Taylor for about 40 years.  Jones said Taylor has been a major community icon.

Jones added that Taylor played a vital role in shaping his life in several ways.

Friday will be Joe Taylor's final day at the North First Street Barber Shop.
