Man sent to prison for failure to register as sex offender

URBANA — A convicted sex offender with a history of not registering his whereabouts with authorities has been sentenced to four years in prison for that offense.

Christopher Powell, 28, whose last known address was in the 300 block of Century Boulevard, Rantoul, pleaded guilty in April to failure to register as a sex ofender.

He admitted that in February, he was not living at the address in the Rantoul that he had registered with the police department.

Because of a sex-related conviction from Tazewell County in 2000, Powell is required to register his current address with the police department in the jurisdiction in which he lives.

Assistant State's Attorney Scott Bennett said Rantoul police got a tip in late January that Powell might be living in Vermilion County. Police visited his Century Boulevard address and found he hadn't lived there for at least three months, Bennett said.

They then found him at another address in Rantoul and Powell admitted he hadn't registered that new address, Bennett said.

The prosecutor said Powell has been convicted in Sangamon County twice and once in Champaign County for failure to register as a sex offender.

Judge Heidi Ladd imposed the sentence on Powell Wednesday.
