Rantoul man charged with predatory criminal sexual assault of a child

URBANA — A Rantoul man accused of sexually molesting a young boy is due back in court July 30 after being charged with a Class X felony.

Roberto Barbosa, 24, who listed an address in the 1300 block of Doolittle Boulevard, was arraigned Thursday on a single count of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, which was filed Wednesday.

The charge alleges sexual contact with a child under the age of 5 sometime between October 2012 and March 2013 that happened in Rantoul.

Assistant State's Attorney Lindsey Clark said the case came to the attention of the Department of Children and Family Services, which was working with Barbosa on an unrelated matter.

Also on Wednesday, Barbosa pleaded guilty to domestic battery for an incident that occurred in March with a Loda woman. He was sentenced to two years of probation and 80 days in jail with credit for 80 days already served.

If convicted of the sex charge, Barbosa faces a mandatory prison term of six to 30 years. He's being held on $500,000 bond in the county jail.

Clark said besides the domestic battery, Barbosa had criminal convictions for battery and theft.
