First property tax payment due

URBANA — The first installment of Champaign County property tax payments is due today (Monday, June 3) at the county treasurer's office.

Taxes can be paid by several means:

— at the 24-hour drop box in the south circle drive at the Brookens Center, 1776 E. Washingtom St., U.

— in person at the Champaign County Treasurer's office at the Brookens Center using cash, personal/business checks or VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Discover and VISA Debit. A convenience fee averaging 1.75 percent is required on all credit card transactions. A flat $3.95 convenience fee is required for VISA Debit transactions.

— at a local participating bank with the original tax bill.

— by mail, as long as the payment has a postmark of June 3 or earlier

— by the Internet using VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Discover and VISA Debit at: http://www.illinoisepay.com (A convenience fee averaging 1.75 percent is assessed on all credit card transactions. A flat fee of $3.95 is required on all VISA Debit transactions).

— by a toll-free telephone payments using VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Discover and VISA Debit at: 1-877-690-3729 (Jurisdiction code 7004). (A convenience fee averaging 1.75 percent is required on all credit card transactions. A flat fee of $3.95 is required on all VISA Debit transactions).

The second installment of property tax payments is due on Sept. 3.

The treasurer's office mailed about 76,000 real estate tax bills this year and will collect more than $285 million. The money collected is distributed to more than 125 taxing districts, including schools, cities and villages, park districts and the county government.
