Thomasboro man charged with sex abuse

THOMASBORO — A Thomasboro man is being held at the Champaign County Jail in connection with the alleged aggravated sexual abuse of two girls about a year ago.

Richard Franklin, 62, who listed an address in the 600 block of Shurbet Street, was charged Monday with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a victim under age 13.

Judge Richard Klaus set Franklin's bond at $100,000 and ordered Franklin to have no contact with either victim.

Franklin's next court appearance was set for Aug. 6.

According to Thomasboro Police Chief Keith Willis, two girls that he knew under the age of 11 were visiting him at his home in June 2012 when he allegedly touched them inappropriately.

After the girls told a family member, the family member reported it to police, who launched what Willis described as a lengthy investigation.

When the investigation concluded about a month ago, Thomasboro police turned over their evidence to the Champaign County state's attorney's office, which got a warrant for Franklin's arrest.

Police arrested Franklin at his home at 7 p.m. Saturday.
