AAA: Illinois gas prices continue to be high

Gas prices in Champaign County and in Illinois were up last month according to AAA.

Locally, the average price for a gallon was $3.78.  That's up 21 cents from April and up 18 cents from the same time last year.

Statewide, the average price was $3.95 a gallon, up 16 cents from April and up seven cents from the same time last year.

AAA also says Illinois gas prices remain among the highest in the nation.  Chicago has the highest city average at $4.44 a gallon.

As a perspective, gas prices in the Dallas-Fort Worth area right now are in the low 3.20's, such as 3.23/gallon. Of course this area has not city gas tax, the state gas tax is 20 cents/gallon as compared to Illinois at 39.1 cents and then add on the city gas tax. But the state tax differential does not explain why gas is more in Illinois on a regular basis.
