Champaign man dies in two-vehicle crash in rural Champaign

CHAMPAIGN — A Champaign man killed in a two-vehicle crash in west Champaign Wednesday night apparently ran head-on into a semitrailer.

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said Richard A. Relliford III, 20, of the 500 block of Nathaniel Burch, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident that happened about 6:05 p.m.

Champaign County sheriff's Sgt. Dan Coile said Mr. Relliford was headed north on Staley Road, just south of Cardinal Road, when his sport utility vehicle crossed into the southbound lane and collided head-on with a semi driven by Donald L. Shank, 54, of Oakwood.

Northrup said Mr. Relliford was the only person in the vehicle. He received multiple traumatic injuries.

Northrup said toxicology testing will be performed on Mr. Relliford.

Coile said Shank was not injured. He went to Carle Foundation Hospital for a voluntary blood draw.
