Champaign school board member Stig Lanesskog resigns

CHAMPAIGN — School board member Stig Lanesskog has resigned from the board.

Superintendent Judy Wiegand said she and other board members received Lanesskog's resignation late Thursday. It's effective immediately, she said.

Lanesskog did not immediately return a phone message asking for comment.

School board President Laurie Bonnett said she doesn't know why Lanesskog resigned and hasn't spoken with him since receiving his resignation.

She said she will await Wiegand's instructions on filling his position.

School board policy says the board must notify the Regional Office of Education within five days of the vacancy and must select a new member to fill the open seat within 45 days. Because Lanesskog was serving a two-year term he was elected to in April, the person the board selects will finish out his term.

Through that process, "one of the things we're going to be is open and public and not behind closed doors," Bonnett said. "We want to make sure we're as up-front and forthright as we can be, because we have a lot of stuff on our plate."

Lanesskog was first elected to the board in 2009 and ran for a two-year term in the recent election. The term was one left open by the resignations of then-board members Sue Grey and Tommy Lockman.

The other two-year seat was filled by incumbent Ileana Saveley, whom the board selected last year to fill the seat left open when board member Greg Novak died.

More information will be added as it becomes available.

How bad does it suck to be on the Champaign school board? They turn people over like it was a corn detassling job.

Meg, is this sour grapes or is there a reason for concern?   I didn't quite follow the FOIA story and why any of that mattered.  I could speculate, but there is an awful lot of noise that is drawing a lot of attention.  Now can someone please tell us what the hell is really going on?

Eric, Those are good questions. I have a call into Stig and plan to ask him why he resigned when he calls me back.

No one wants to be on the school board when property taxes go up $500/year to pay for all the new construction.

The new school built in Savoy was not needed. The Champaign School district is like a train heading for a big wreck. People are not going to be able to pay their high taxes and that is all due to the school district. I really feel for the people in Champaign.
