No injuries in fire at Plastipak

CHAMPAIGN — Plastipak workers evacuated the plant on the far-west side of the city this afternoon after what appeared to be a mechanical fire broke out, but no one was hurt.

Lt. John Bell of the Eastern Prairie Fire Protection District said his department was dispatched at 1:39 p.m. Sunday afternoon to a fire alarm at the packaging facility. Workers were evacuating when firefighters arrived and reported that a fire was burning on the backside of the building.

Bell did not have a number on how many people were inside when the fire broke out, but he said it was a "full shift" of workers.

Eastern Prairie Fire called for support from half a dozen other rural departments, but firefighters had the fire under control in a few minutes.

The cause is still under investigation, but Bell said it appeared to be the result of a mechanical malfunction.

"They should be back up and running by tomorrow," Bell said.
