Champaign man facing drug charge

URBANA — A Champaign man was arrested over the weekend after Urbana police found him with suspected marijuana and discovered suspected cocaine in his flight path.

Telvin Chatman, 30, who listed an address in the 200 block of West Vine Street, Champaign, was charged Monday with unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

Chatman is being held at the Champaign County Jail on $20,000 bond.

His next court appearance was set for July 23.

According to a police report, officers were called to the 500 block of East Michigan Avenue, Urbana, at 11:52 p.m. Friday after receiving a report of two suspicious subjects.

When police arrived, they found two men running away from them.

Officers caught one of the men, identified as Chatman.

Police said they found a bag containing suspected powdered cocaine and three packages of suspected crack cocaine in Chatman's flight path. The cocaine totaled 18.52 grams (0.65 ounce).

When officers searched Chatman, they found 0.18 gram (0.006 ounce) of suspected marijuana on his person and arrested him.

Chatman told police he had been there to buy cocaine from another person, who was not identified.
