Annual Daily Bread fundraiser set for Friday

CHAMPAIGN — The Daily Bread Soup Kitchen, an organization that feeds hundreds of homeless and needy people every day in Champaign, is holding its annual fundraiser Friday evening.

The event raised $20,000 last year, but Daily Bread's leaders hope to top that this year, said Gina Stocking, a volunteer and board member of the agency.

The fourth annual fundraiser will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday at Alto Vineyards, 4210 N. Duncan Road, C.

It includes a soup-kitchen meal of soup, a sandwich, a salad, desert and lemonade, plus music by Candy Foster and Shades of Blue and dancing. Tickets are $25 per person, and there will be a cash bar.

About one-fourth of the people Daily Bread serves are homeless, but there are also many families with children who have homes but can't make ends meet coming for meals, Stocking said.

"Three-quarters of them have places to live, but they don't have money for food and to pay their bills," she added.

Meals are provided at New Covenant Fellowship on weekdays and from a van in the parking lots of UpClose Marketing & Printing on Saturday and in the parking lot of Habitat from Humanity on Sunday.

Daily Bread runs on volunteer labor but still must deal with rising costs for supplies, Stocking said.

"We are serving great meals, (with) protein, vegetable, potato, salad, fruit and dessert," she added. "We're feeding them well for what it costs us, but the costs keep going up."

Tickets for the fundraiser will be available at the door, she said.
