Presence hospitals offering toll-free help line

URBANA — Feeling sick and need to talk to a nurse?

For the first time, Presence Covenant Medical Center and Presence United Samaritans Medical Center have launched a toll-free nurse help line, offering free health advice.

Any patients, whether they're Presence Health patients or not — can call 1-877-737-INFO (4636), between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. and noon Saturday.

"The goal is to (eventually) make it 24 hours," said hospital spokeswoman Crystal Senesac.

The new help line came about as a result of the merger between Provena Health and Resurrection Health Care to create Presence Health, Senesac said. Resurrection Health Care hospitals have these nurse information lines, so they're also being added at the former Provena hospitals, she said.

The nurses staffing the lines at the Urbana and Danville hospitals are certified in telehealth and have broad nursing experience, and many have graduate degrees, according to Cheryl Dusenbery, the Presence Health INFO line director.

The nurses will give patients medical advice over the phone and advise them whether they need to seek care immediately or whether it can wait, Senesac said.

The INFO line can also be used to find a doctor, a convenient or urgent care location, or to obtain information on hospital services, according to the hospitals.
