Man struck by car in Rantoul dies

RANTOUL — A pedestrian outside a Rantoul restaurant died Thursday morning after being struck by a car.

Rantoul police were called to the Hardee's restaurant at 326 S. Century Blvd. shortly after 8 a.m.

They found Vernon Haskins, 71, of Onarga on the ground. He was taken by ambulance to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, where he was later pronounced dead.

Rantoul police Sgt. Sean Arie said Mr. Haskins was struck by a car driven by Sidney Porter, 41, of the 600 block of Illinois Street, Rantoul. Arie said Porter was pulling his car into a parking space and apparently didn't see Mr. Haskins walking across the lot.

Porter told The News-Gazette that he is an employee of Hardee’s who knows Mr. Haskins from being a regular customer. Porter said he did not see Mr. Haskins emerging from between two cars as he pulled in.

“I did not see him. I did not mean to hurt him,” said an obviously distressed Porter. “I feel so sorry for him. I am so sorry.”

“Every morning when he comes in, he makes his order and nine times out of 10, I’ll bring it to him,” said Porter.

Porter was ticketed for driving with a revoked license.

The accident remains under investigation.
