Probation, jail sentence for cannabis possession

URBANA — A Champaign man who admitted he possessed cannabis in his home more than a year ago has been sentenced to two years of probation.

Vasily G. Baycharov, 26, who listed an address in the 300 block of East Green Street, pleaded guilty earlier this week to possession of between 30 and 500 grams of cannabis.

He was also sentenced to 45 days in the county jail and ordered to pay fines and costs of more than $8,600.

Urbana police arrested Baycharov following a court-ordered search of his home on Jan. 12, 2012. Police found a large amount of cannabis, packaging materials and a digital scale.

In exchange for Baycharov’s plea to the Class 4 felony offense, the more serious charge alleging he had a greater amount of cannabis was dismissed.

Judge Harry Clem ordered Baycharov to begin serving his jail sentence July 1.
