Crash closes portion of northbound I-57 near Pesotum

PESTOUM — Northbound traffic on Interstate 57 was diverted Monday morning to U.S. 45 because of a crash on the interstate just north of the Pesotum rest area.

The crash occurred around 6:30 a.m. Monday, and the pileup was blocking both northbound lanes, a state trooper said.

Traffic was directed to U.S. 45 at the Pesotum exit and then redirected to I-57 at the Monticello Road interchange.

The backup began after an initial collision in the early morning fog, which was worsened by one or two secondary crashes, said the trooper.

There were reports of possible minor injuries, the trooper said, but no fatalities.
