Raffle offering first use of Urbana pool features

URBANA — Swimming pool fans can enter a raffle to be part of a history-making event: being the first person to use various features at Urbana's new Crystal Lake Park aquatics center.

A First Ride Down the Slide Raffle is being held between now and June 27 to raise money for the Urbana Park District's youth scholarship fund.

The aquatics center's grand opening is set for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 29, but the actual opening of the $9.1 million facility — which has been plagued by construction delays because of wet spring weather — could occur sooner.

Raffle tickets are available for $1 each in cash at the Phillips Recreation Center, 505 W. Stoughton St., U, and the Urbana Indoor Aquatic Center, 102 E. Michigan Ave., U, during public hours. Tickets may be purchased by people age 18 and up.

Each one-dollar donation gives the contestant a chance at being the first to use the pool feature selected:

— Dump Bucket

— Streambed

— Vortex

— Sand Play

— Diving Board (must be able to swim in deep water)

— Drop Slide into deep water (must be 48 inches tall and able to swim in deep water)

— Flume Slide into shallow water (must be 48 inches tall)

— Climbing Wall (must be able to swim in deep water)

The winner may transfer the prize to an immediate family member.

Each winner also will be admitted to the aquatics center for the chosen activity and may stay until closing.

One person will be selected from the entries for each pool feature and will be contacted by the park district to come to the main gate of the aquatic center on the opening day at 10:15 a.m.

The park district also may choose a second- and third-place winner for each category who will be second and third to use the equipment before it is opened for general use.

Winners will be selected about two days before opening day. If the aquatics center opening takes place before June 27, the raffle will end at 5 p.m. two days before the opening day.

Donations support the Urbana Park District Youth Scholarship Fund, which allows the district to provide fee waivers for families with financial need.
