Woman found dead in portable toilet identified as former resident of Champaign and Urbana
DECATUR — The Macon County coroner said that a woman who was found dead in a portable toilet at a high school construction site last week was a former resident of Champaign and Urbana.
Macon County Coroner Michael E. Day identified the woman as Karen Kay Gilbert-Gibbs, 44.
"We found identification that indicated that she lived in Champaign at one time and in Urbana at another time," Day said on Monday.
She had also lived in Bloomington; Fort Wayne, ind.; Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio, he said.
Day said that a construction worker found Ms. Gilbert-Gibbs on the grounds of Decatur MacArthur High School, 1155 N. Fairview Avenue, Decatur, in a portable toilet at 7 a.m. Wednesday.
Day said he pronounced the woman dead at the scene at 8:22 a.m. Wednesday.
The woman wasn't identified publicly until Ms. Gilbert-Gibbs' next-of-kin could be contacted. Day said he was able to contact Ms. Gilbert-Gibbs' aunt and uncle in the Cleveland area.
According to a report, the woman had a chronic health condition and she may have been in Decatur to seek medical treatment.
Day said that the cause of death remains undetermined pending the completion of toxicology testing.
An autopsy performed at the McLean County morgue on Thursday showed no signs of violence or acute trauma, Day said.
"There was no sign of foul play," Day said.
