Updated: Foster to run for Champaign mayor

A Champaign City Council member has officially announced her intentions to run for mayor in two years.

Karen Foster told the WDWS newsroom on Monday  that she will run for the seat in the spring of 2015, setting up a battle with current Mayor Don Gerard, who said he will seek a second term leading the city.

Foster, who was born and raised in Champaign, said her experience on the council has prepared her to be mayor.

Foster said even though she will be running for mayor, it will not change her approach on the council, and it will not impact her votes as a council member in any way.

Previously, councilwoman Deb Feinen said on the WDWS Morning Show that she's also interested in running for Champaign mayor.

Foster said she has no concerns with a crowded field.

Candidates still have to file their petitions for their campaign to become official, but the ability to do that is well over a year away.  An exact filing date has not yet been set by the State Board of Elections.

Meanwhile, Mayor Gerard says a competitive race for his office, will be good for everyone involved.

Gerard says there have been several changes in Champaign since he took office in 2011 with a new police chief, a new city manager, construction projects, and more.

He says he would love to continue leading the city beyond the expiration of his term in 2015.
